The below guide provides you a step by step approach to the online ticket booking process.
- Registration: In the first step of registration, you shall give an active e-mail address and the password you would like to use for the e-Ticket pages. (Please note that your password shall be at least 6 characters long.) After accepting the conditions of use, you will receive a confirmation e-mail to your registered e-mail address shortly. You can activate your registration by clicking on the link embedded in the e-mail.
You can give your invoicing data after your first log-in.
If you do not remember your password, please click on Have you forgotten your password? Please type your registered e-mail address, and you will shortly receive an e-mail with a link. Click on this link (or copy it to your browser's address bar), then you will be able to set a new password without providing your existing one. The link is valid for 3 days. You have to start the process again after the link has expired.
You can cancel your registration by clicking Delete registration after signing in.
If there is no completed purchase associated with your registration, it will be deleted permanently.
If there is at least 1 completed purchase associated with your registration, it will be inactivated. The data of your previous purchase(s) is kept by the deadline set for complaint settlement, and stated in the tax, asset protection and other regulations. Please note, that if you have not collected tickets, not downloaded Home Printed Tickets or electronic invoices, you will not be able to access them after your registration has been inactivated.
It is not allowed to register again with an inactivated e-mail address.
- Entering invoicing data:
If you require an invoice, you shall record the data of the recipient of the invoice first. When you
Sign in, and you click
Invoicing data in the right side of the display, the window where you can complete this task appears.
If you pay your ticket with Mobile Purchase, the invoice will be issued by your mobile operator, and it is not necessary to register invoicing data.
To enter new data, select New data entry in the pull-down menu of Recorded invoicing data.
Give the type of the recipient of the invoice: Select the Natural person option, if the recipient of the invoice is a live person, private person, except if you request an invoice as a private entrepreneur. In any other case, please select the Economic organization option.
For example, the following are considered as economic organizations: business organizations (unlimited partnership, limited liability company, Plc., etc.), private entrepreneurs, associations, foundations, institutions (schools, hospitals etc.), budgetary authorities (municipalities, ministries, etc.), public benefit companies, public organizations, churches etc.
If you want to register a natural person, please call MÁVDIREKT by phone: +36 (1) 3 494 949, where you can dictate your data to our colleagues, who complete your registration. If you record the data through the webpage, our colleagues complete a data control within about 2 working days, and if they find everything in order, they send you an e-mail about the activation of the invoicing data. If the data do not cover a natural person, then the registration is rejected, and they send you an e-mail about it as well. It is obligatory to fill the name and address fields, we do not require the TAX code of natural persons, and economic organizations are obliged to give it only in cases specified by the VAT code. User shall be liable for the validity of the given data. Under this point of the menu, you can change your recorded invoicing data (except for the name and the type of the recipient) and you can delete them as well
In case of home ticket printing you will always receive an electronic invoice of the purchase, so please do not forget to register your invoicing data in the system.
- Sign in:
After typing in the e-mail address and password you have given at your registration, click Sign in to log-in the e-Ticket system. A detailed prompter will help you to fill in the fields (white question mark in a blue circle). Clicking Ticket purchase on the next page, the route selection screen appears.
- Journey selection: : Please give the details of the journey on the route selection screen. Please fill the From - To fields to specify the departure and arrival stations respectively. Set the date of the journey in the date selection form by clicking on the required day. If you want to buy a 30 day pass, you can set the first day of validity here. (Month can be changed using >>> arrows). On this page you can select travel discounts as well. Clicking
Search the list of available trains appear (use the scrollbar on the side to see the entire list).
- 5. Train selection: You can receive detailed information by clicking on the selected train. Clicking Ticket purchase next to the train, you can initiate ticket purchase for the given train. (You cannot initiate ticket purchase for the past.)
If you click on the selected train, a printer icon at the services of the train indicates if you can buy Home Printed Ticket for this train.
- Ticket selection:
- Ticket type: ticket and supplementary ticket/seat reservation, supplementary ticket/seat reservation only, railway ticket or pass only, first class supplementary ticket, pass.
Return ticket cannot be bought with home printing.
- Type of journey (One-way, Return - default: One-way).
Return ticket cannot be bought with home printing.
- Budapest-pass Connecting ticket for Budapest-pass appears only if you have chosen the With Budapest Pass option on the route selection screen.
- Discount rate (pull-down menu).
Tickets available with home ticket printing are marked by a red star before the discount, and the red text colour of the discount. Passes and Event round-trip tickets are not available with home ticket printing.
- Travel class. (2nd class, 1st class - default: 2nd class).
If carrying bicycle is allowed on the selected train with obligatory place reservation for bicycle, you have to select whether you carry a bicycle or not before adding the ticket to the basket. If you carry bicycle, both the bicycle ticket and the place reservation will be added to the basket. Please note, that passengers without bicycle cannot be seated in the bicycle carrier car.
If it is not possible to collect the ticket at the departure station, as there is no e-ticket machine settled, then a red lettered text on the top of the page will call your attention to this fact.
If it is not possible to buy Home Printed Tickets for the journey, then a red lettered text on the top of the page will call your attention to this fact. Clicking on the Details you can see why home ticket printing is not available (probable causes: train, ticket type, type of journey or discount is not supported; or invoicing data are missing). Please enter your invoicing data in time!
If you have chosen a return journey, the Return journey - Journey selection button appears.
Return tickets are not available with home ticket printing. If you prefer home ticket printing, please buy your ticket for your outward and return journey in two different transactions.
If you click on the button, you get to the route selection screen again, where you can select the required service after setting the required date. If you click on Ticket purchaseyou will see the ticket selection window again, where you can set other data of the tickets: pieces (if you want to buy more than one ticket for the same route, with the same discount, please set the number of pieces here), travel class, discount. Please select the discount you are entitled to. Select the rate of discount from the pull-down menu, and then select the type of discount from the secondary list. If you move the cursor on the names of different discounts, a brief information of the given discount appears. This information is not comprehensive, exact eligibility conditions related to the given discount, are included in the Terms & Conditions of MÁV-START Co. (download here),and you can request information from MÁVDIREKT, at railway stations and booking offices. The list of discounts is the same as discounts appearing on the route selection screen. After the entry of the required data, you can add your ticket to the basket by clicking on Add ticket to the basket Then, if you want to buy another ticket for the same route, with another discount, select the eligible discount from the pull-down menu, set pieces, and click on Add ticket to the basket again. The basket appears on the right side of the display. Here you can check the data of the selected journey by clicking on the Details link, and here you can cancel your tickets as well. If you click on New journey you can select another route and other tickets, which will be placed next to the previous ones in the basket, if you have not deleted them.
If you choose home ticket printing, then you can book tickets for one journey only, but you can place several tickets for this journey into the basket.
If you want to buy a pass, you can find pass types in the pull-down "Discount" menu. Here you can choose the type of the pass.
Then you can select the length of the validity period from the displayed "Pass validity" pull-down menu. First day of validity of the 30 day pass can be set at journey selection
On the right side of the display you can continuously monitor if the tickets in the basket can be purchased by a natural person or a business organisation against an invoice. Invoices printed by e-ticket machines may contain maximum 7 items because of technical reasons. The program monitors the basket continuously, and notices if this limit is exceeded. If the possibility of issuing the invoice changed because of any of the above reasons, you can delete the last tickets added to the basket using the Delete Delete button. You can find more information about invoicing under the point Invoicing guide of the menu.
On the right side of the display you can continuously monitor if the tickets in the basket can be paid with Mobile Purchase. Mobile Purchase is available for paying full-fare tickets, IC supplementary tickets and/or seat reservations, pet tickets and bicycle tickets only. The value of the basket must be between HUF 130 and HUF 7 500. Ticket prebooking must be within 15 days prior to the journey.
The data of your journey can be reviewed on the right side of the screen by clicking on Journey details. If there are tickets in the basket, the data of the tickets (e.g. discount, pieces, price) can be reviewed by clicking on Ticket details. The last ticket put in the basket can be deleted by clicking on Remove last items. If you would like to delete any other ticket from the basket, you have to delete the complete basket, by clicking on Empty basket after clicking on Ticket details. If the selected train does not suit you, please delete your basket as written before, then plan your journey again by clicking on New journey.
- Ticket type: ticket and supplementary ticket/seat reservation, supplementary ticket/seat reservation only, railway ticket or pass only, first class supplementary ticket, pass.
- How to receive the tickets added to the basket:
With the selecting buttons at the bottom of the page you can select how you would like to collect your tickets: print them at home, or collect them from an e-Ticket machine located at selected railway stations. If a train with obligatory seat reservation has been selected, way of ticket collection can be set together with reservation settings on the next screen.
For home printing of tickets please mark the Home ticket printing option. Then click on the Home ticket printing DATA ENTRY button, and your tickets added to the basket will appear. If you do not want to print your tickets at home, please click on Back, then select e-Ticket machine as a way of ticket collection. Please do not use the navigation buttons of your browser.
Please check, whether the ticket is valid for the train you would like to travel with. If the data of the journey and the service are right, please fill in the names and date of birth of the passengers. It is important that together with your eligibility for the discount you shall always prove your personal identity as well, so please always enter the data in accordance with your personal identification document. After the personalization of the tickets, click Verify Home Printed Ticket data and verify all the data. To correct the data, click on Back. Please do not use the navigation buttons of your browser. By clicking Pay, you can select the invoicing data in the regular way on the payment page.
- Booking of supplementary tickets/Seat reservations:
If you select seat reservations to several tickets in one process on the ticket selection window, the seat ticket system tries to book
seat reservations next to each other until you do not change the travel class. In case of collecting the tickets from e-Ticket Machine,
supplementary tickets / seat reservations (surcharges) bought together for the same class of the same train are printed on 1 ticket, regardless
of the number of surcharges purchased. The reserved seats are listed separately (e.g. 31, 33) or - in case of continuous numbering -
with range (e.g. 65-68) on the printed ticket. Contrarily if you select another train (or even the same one) on the route selection screen
by clicking New journey, it is not sure that the seat reservations will be offered next to each other.
If the selected train requires compulsory seat reservations or supplementary tickets with seat reservation, then the Seat reservation button appears after the selection of the tickets. You can set your preferences for reservation after clicking this button.
Automatic reservation is made without preferences. You can set your preferences for seat location in Reservation with preferences. Maximum 2 window seats and 2 aisle seats can be set even if there are more than 4 passengers. Checking the At table option means reservation will be definitely at table; leaving the checkbox empty does not necessarily mean a seat without table though. Seat reservation according to the settings is subject of availability.
To reserve a seat next to a previously booked one, use the Booking next to a previously booked seat option. Seat reservation according to the settings is subject of availability.
After setting the way of ticket collection, click on Seat reservation and payment to make the reservation. In case of successful reservation the data of reservation appears, and you can continue the process with the personalisation of home printed ticket or payment depending on the selected collection mode.
If supplementary ticket/seat reservation booking cannot be fulfilled, then a related warning text appears on the top of table with the data of the required reservation. You can continue the process without reservation (i.e. you will not receive a seat reservation for the selected train), or delete the basket and start the booking over.
If the booking cannot be fulfilled according to the settings (position, next to a previously booked seat), a related warning text appears on the top of table with the data of the required reservation. You can continue the process with an automatic seat reservation (i.e. omitting the set preferences) for the selected train and class, or delete the basket and start the booking over.
In peak hours MÁV-START may add extra cars to the InterCity trains, but these extra cars are with lesser comfort. A warning appears if reservation is only possible in these cars. You can accept the reservation in the car with lesser comfort, or delete the basket and start the booking over.
- Payment: By clicking Pay the total sum of the purchase appears, clicking on details
, you can check the data of the selected tickets.
At this point, the basket cannot be modified, if the way of ticket collection or the basket contents are not correct, you have to sign out by clicking on Sign-out on the right side of the screen to delete the complete basket. Please do not use the navigation buttons of your browser to step back to previous pages.
On the page appearing after successful payment you will find the ten-digit ticket reference number to be used for the collection of the tickets. You can request us to send you the ticket reference number by e-mail now. Please note that MÁV-START does not assume any liability for the unauthorised usage of the ticket reference number sent by e-mail!
You do not receive reference number if you choose home ticket printing, but you can open your ticket by clicking Home ticket printing . Please always print your ticket on white A4 paper, and take that with you!
If you request an invoice of the ticket purchase, you can indicate it at this point. Please note that we cannot issue invoice subsequently, if you do not indicate your invoicing requirement here. The ticket serves as a receipt of purchase if you do not request an invoice. Invoice can be issued of the complete transaction only.
You can enter invoicing data any time after log-in by clicking Invoicing data on the right side of the display.
If you require an invoice, please select the recipient from the previously recorded invoicing data. If you record a new invoicing data at this point, please click on Refresh above Bank payment to make the new item appear on the list of previously recorded data. If the basket contains discount ticket as well, you can select names registered as natural persons only.
In case of home ticket printing please always choose electronic invoice. If you have selected Home Ticket Printing previously, but choose I do not request an invoice or I request a printed invoice, you can collect your tickets from the e-Ticket Machines only.

If you find everything in order, , please select, how would you like to pay for the tickets - with bank card, or from your mobile account (Mobile Purchase). Please read Conditions of Use before payment carefully. (A point of the menu bar in the bottom of the page.)
- Bank payment: If you chose Bank payment, click on Bank payment. You will be redirected to the Internet payment platform of OTP Bank. You have to give your bank card data on the Bank platform for payment. Bank card data given here cannot be recognised by the Service Provider, these are processed directly by the Bank. Service Provider is not liable for any failure occurring on the bank payment page. Success or failure of the given payment transaction is reported to the User by the system, and these can be seen under Previous purchases later as well. More information about bank card payment:

- Mobile payment (payment from your mobile phone account - Mobile Purchase):
If you chose Mobile payment, please enter the phone number to be used for payment. The prefix can be selected from the roll-down menu, then enter your 7-digit phone number continuously, without space or other separator. After clicking on Mobile payment you will shortly receive an sms, including the amount to be paid. Answer this message (e.g.: Yes, OK) within 3 minutes to confirm your purchase. If you do not answer within 3 minutes, or you send "nem" (all lowercase) the purchase will be cancelled. You can start a new payment by clicking on Return to payment.Please do not close this window, exit your browser or
sign-out from the e-Ticket system during payment. Please wait until the confirmation screen appears.
- Correction during purchase:
Please make sure, that your basket always contains the right tickets throughout the purchase process.
The price of the already paid tickets can only be refunded in accordance with the Terms & Conditions of MÁV-START.
During ticket selection the last ticket put in the basket can be deleted by clicking on Remove last items. If you would like to delete any other ticket from the basket, you have to delete the complete basket, by clicking on Empty basket after clicking on Ticket details. If the selected train does not suit you, please delete your basket as written before, then plan your journey again by clicking on New journey.
After completing ticket selection, the basket cannot be modified. To delete the contents of basket, you have to sign out by clicking on Sign-out on the right side of the screen. The contents of the basket can be reviewed before payment. At this point, the basket cannot be modified, if the way of ticket collection or the basket contents are not correct, you have to sign out by clicking on Sign-out on the right side of the screen to delete the complete basket. Please do not use the navigation buttons of your browser to step back to previous pages.
Before authorising the payment on the payment page of OTP Bank, please verify that the displayed sum equals the price of the purchased tickets. If you find any differences, please cancel payment, and after you are redirected back to the e-Ticket system, sign-out. Then start your purchase again by signing in. Please act similarly in case of mobile payment.
Previously recorded invoicing data can be modified by clicking Invoicing data. It is not possible to change name and/or type of recipient of an existing entry; in this case you have to create a new entry. If there is any error in the recipient's data on a received invoice, please contact our Client Service. Please do not forget to correct your recorded data as well.
- Receiving tickets: After successful payment you will be redirected back to the page of the e-Ticket system, where you can see the ten-digit reference number entitling you to receive the tickets purchased.
At Home ticket printing the reference number does not appear, but you can download your ticket using the Home ticket printing button. Please always print your ticket on white A4 paper, and take it with you. Recommended browser to download the ticket: latest version of Internet Explorer or FireFox; recommended software to open and print the ticket: latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
You can print the page, but it is enough for ticket collection to record the ten-digit number that entitles you to collect your ticket. If you click New purchase, you get back to the route selection screen, and you can buy tickets again if you want to. Clicking Sign out, you can exit the system.
- It may occur that the payment process is interrupted by some failure. If the payment was successful, but the page containing the ten-digit ticket reference number does not appear, then after a repeated log-in to the system, you can decide whether you close the last successful payment by clicking Complete purchase. Then the page containing the ticket reference number appears. Otherwise you can delete the purchase and the payment transaction as well by clicking Delete purchase. (Your bank account will not be charged this case.)
If the purchase also contained a seat reservation, then the system offers the resetting of the seat reservation as well using the Repeat seat reservation. (The former payment will be cancelled in this case.)
You can review the data of your tickets purchased under Previous purchases of the menu. Tickets collected (printed) are differentiated by a blue background colour from those not received yet. Detailed data of the tickets can be seen if you click Details:

Collection of tickets purchased
Tickets purchased online you can collect from touch screen e-ticket machines settled at stations. Please enter the ten-digit reference number received at buying using the touch screen of the e-ticket machine, then tap the (BEVITEL - Enter) arrow. Then the e-ticket machine will print the tickets bought. (If you have accidentally mistyped a digit, please delete it with the (TÖRLÉS - Delete) arrow.) Surcharges bought together in one process (for the same train and class) are printed on 1 ticket, regardless of the number of surcharges purchased.

or you are not sure how to use that, please call MÁVDIREKT: +36 (1) 3 494 949!
Tickets bought with home ticket printing cannot be collected from the e-ticket machines; they shall be printed on your own printer. People travelling together with Home Printed Tickets receive personalised ticket. If the ticket contains a train with obligatory surcharge, the reserved seat is printed on the ticket (i.e. each person in the group gets a separate ticket with the exact seat number).
If you could not collect your tickets booked and paid because of the inoperable status of the e-ticket machine, please inform the ticket inspector about it on the train, in case of international tickets please contact our Client Service. (Please do not reveal the 10 digit ticket reference number received at the buying to anyone, neither to the ticket inspector.) The ticket inspector prepares a document about the case. This original document, and the reference data of the purchase (name of buyer, registered e-mail address, exact time of the purchase), and your contact data (address, telephone number) shall be submitted to the Client Service of MÁV-START Co. within 15 days (1426 Budapest, Pf. 56.). Documents are accepted in e-mail (email@example.com) and by fax (+36-1-511-2093) by our Client Service as well. Our colleagues investigate the given data, and they make their decisions based on them.
